One of the geekier things I do: I spend a lot (compared to how much time such a subject should warrant) of time thinking about military structures in the Transformers universe, and how they correspond to actual non-fictional militaries. Specifically, how the nature of warfare changes when your soldiers are essentially immortal, but you've only got 40 of them.
So for instance, where the US Army has an entire corps of engineers, the Autobots have got Huffer (and Wheeljack on a good day). Where the US military great numbers of medics, munitions specialists and intelligence agents, the Autobots have Ratchet, Bluestreak and Mirage (who half the team thinks is a spy anyway). And while there are plenty of Autobots who are classed simply as 'warriors', all of these specialists fight with the main force every time there's a major battle.
So can you imagine commanding a force like this? Step into Optimus Prime's role for a moment. The Autobots need to build something, a bridge or whatnot, close to Decepticon forces. Huffer, your construction engineer, is the only being on your entire force who knows how to do the job right. But you have to send half the Autobots with him to build it, because a) Huffer's whiny and lazy, and b) if Huffer gets killed, there'll be no more bridge building for the Autobots, because their entire construction engineering force has been eliminated.
Just take a look at the functions of the Autobots who landed with the Ark (the 1984 line):
| Name | Function |
| Optimus Prime | Autobot Leader |
| Huffer | Construction Engineer |
| Mirage | Counter Intelligence |
| Trailbreaker | Defensive Strategist |
| Brawl | Demolitions |
| Bumblebee | Espionage |
| Bluestreak | Gunner |
| Prowl | Military Strategist |
| Wheeljack | Mechanical Engineer |
| Ratchet | Medic |
| Jazz | Saboteur |
| Ironhide | Security |
| Hound | Scout |
| Gears | Transport and Reconnaissance |
| Cliffjumper | Warrior |
| Sideswipe | Warrior |
| Sunstreaker | Warrior |
| Windcharger | Warrior |
Out of the 18 original Autobots, there are only four 'warriors'; everyone else is a specialist of some kind. Granted, some are more specialized than others. If your medic is destroyed, you're in more trouble than if you lost your "Transport and Reconnaissance" guy. It took a year for the Autobots to even get a Communications Specialist!
This the the only thing that sufficiently explains to me why the Autobots, who greatly outnumbered the original Decepticons, didn't just take the fight to the Decepticon sea base. They couldn't afford to take even a single casualty! Imagine how limited a country's military options would be if their acceptable casualty rate was zero.
This is just looking at the original Autobot force. Over the next few years in the toyline and accompanying fiction, the dynamics change as you add more troops of all kinds of different types, including giant bots like Metroplex and Fortress Maximus...
